The Benefits of Implants
Permanent dental implants offer a long-lasting, natural-looking smile for people who have missing or damaged teeth. With implants, you can fill gaps, resolve jaw pain from an uneven bite, and restore your smile, confidence, and ability to eat and drink with ease. They are a more permanent solution than removable appliances such as dentures or a bridge.
How Dental Implants Work
Dental implants offer life-long, natural-looking prosthetic teeth that behave just like real teeth. Installing dental implants is an oral surgical procedure where a screw-like device is installed below the gum line, where the root of a tooth would normally reside. A prosthetic, natural-looking tooth called a crown is installed on top, attached with an item called an abutment. If you are missing teeth and aren’t a good candidate for or don’t wish to pursue a removable solution like dentures, bridges, or partials, dental implants can be a wonderful alternative. After implant surgery, the bones of the mouth and jaw will slowly heal around the installed implant under the gum line, making the implants very sturdy and long-lasting. The healing process can take several months while the bones fuse around the implants.

Are dental implants painful?
Installing dental implants is an oral surgical procedure. Any surgery can be somewhat painful. But just as when you get other dental services such as a filling, crown, or having a tooth pulled, anesthesia is administered beforehand so you won’t feel pain during the surgery. Minor swelling and some pain is to be expected for a few days right after this or any other oral surgery. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®).
How long do implants last?
Dental implants are comprised of three parts — the titanium implant that goes into your jawline; an “abutment,” which is the item that attaches the implant to the prosthetic tooth above the gum line; and the prosthetic tooth, which we call a crown. While the titanium dental implants are designed to last a lifetime, wear and tear on crowns and abutments mean they may need to be replaced after 10-15 years. Heavy-use teeth such as back molars can need more frequent replacement. However, proper, regular hygienic care can play an important part in extending the life of every crown. We will go over all of these details with you to ensure you’re doing everything you can to get the maximum life out of your dental implants.
How long will the procedure take?
Selecting a dental practice with extensive experience with dental implants is important, as their expertise can directly affect the length of the procedure. That being said, most dental implant surgeries take around two hours, but that can vary depending how much work is done. Tradition Dental brings decades of experience in serving all types of patients with dental implant needs, whether to replace a single missing tooth or to fill the whole mouth.
